Supporting Literacy

The following examples are programming and displays focused on supporting developing readers both inside and outside the library.

Interactive Literacy Displays

The following interactive displays are based on the five practices of early literacy: singing, talking, reading, writing, and playing. I designed these displays to encourage play and conversation between children and their guardians, to create print awareness, and provide practice in developing vocabulary. All under the guise of doing something fun! Sneaky learning. That's the best kind.

Outreach Programs and Reading Extension Activities

The Madison Reading Project is a literacy-based nonprofit providing books and programs for underserved children in south-central Wisconsin. During my time with them, I travelled to different community organizations and after school programs to facilitate book-based programming with kids pre-school through fifth grade. I also curated books for distribution to local children to build their personal libraries, and teachers for use in classroom libraries.

As anyone who does program outreach will know, it can often require flexibility and on the spot problem-solving. You never know what kind of room you might be put in to lead your program. For example, check out the photo of my impromptu book display in a repurposed dresser. The kids had a much better time selecting their books when they were face out, rather than stacked in my program bin. Problem solved! ðŸ’ª

Leading Toddler Tales and Baby Storytimes with the Sun Prairie Public Library.

My personal favorite of the weekly songs we sang:

Oh, the city is great and the city is grand (Stand up and dance with a bouncy step)
There are lots of tall buildings
On a little piece of land
We live way up on the fifty-seventh floor
And this is what we do
When we go out the door
Take the elevator up, take the elevator down (3 times) (lift baby up, lower baby down)
Then we spin around (spin around)
